Mid-Michigan SWE Chapter Events

Trust. Integrity. Inclusive. Supportive. Excellent.

This SWE chapter aims to provide opportunities for our community to learn, grow and engage with us through membership, professional development, and outreach.

Membership

Every other month, meet with other SWE members at local Mid-Michigan venues to have an opportunity to meet new friends, catch up with old ones, and enjoy a good meal or drink together.

Professional Development

These events provide mentoring opportunities for our members and community to discuss STEM advocacy, inclusion and professional excellence.

Outreach

SWE is involved in numerous outreach events to reach students of all ages to explore STEM topics and promote critical thinking, leadership and team building skills.

Our events are not possible without our volunteers.

To keep our student outreach and professional development events going, we rely on people like you to invest your time to support our events. Visit our upcoming events page today to see where you can make a difference.

Volunteer Today

Check out some of our past events throughout the years!

SWE sponsored a Q&A session with 3 professionals covering topics such as career progression, young professional advice, challenges faced and opportunities embraced. Members were able to ask the panelist questions and enjoy coffee and donuts together.

SWE co-sponsored two activities through Delta College’s Girls Day Out with Mid- Michigan AIChE. This event reached between 600 and 900 middle school girls, providing an opportunity to investigate STEM fields and activities over the course of the day, through both in person and virtual sessions. For the specific activities SWE sponsored/supported, 45 students participated in the “Unsinkable Ship Challenge”, where students competed to engineer, build and test a boat which met all provided design criteria. Additionally, 22 students learned about the concept of surface tension and used the scientific method to make and test predictions. A big thanks to all the volunteers who supported these activities!

Our “Inclusion in the Workplace” two part series included guest speaker Amy Beasley talking about the importance of Inclusion in the Workplace and a discussion with the local Mid-Michigan community on Driving to 50K Diverse Engineering Grads by 2025 and how you can form an action plan to help!

Members met at Painterly Pottery in Bay City, MI to build relationships with other chapter members while creating beautiful works of art.

SWE President Penny Wirsing visited Mid-Michigan and talked about STEM advocacy – allocation and utilization of funding.

SWE holds a booth at the Dow Great Lakes Bay STEM festival every fall. Activities have included making foam rockets, building catapults, and pH experiments with acids and bases. More than 20,000 visitors of all ages have been to the festival since it started in 2012, with the idea that kids will be able to see STEM concepts on a larger scale than what teachers can show in a classroom.

Members met at Studio 154 in Midland, MI to make fun fall decor and enjoy each other’s company as we enter into the holiday seasons.

Mid-Michigan SWE volunteers partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bay City and Saginaw to help facilitate activities for students ages 6-11. The Boys & Girls Club enables all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. The goal of the STEM in a Box event was to help students develop team building, critical thinking, and leadership skills. Over 60 students, participated in various hands-on activities, including exploring the concept of buoyancy by building aluminum foil boats and testing them with pennies.
